Squint: Cinema from Cinema (Strand)

Since the earliest days of cinema, piracy has gone hand-in-hand with innovation, while artists and film-makers have long used the raw materials of movies to create their own new works. In Squint, we present films made from films, transformative creations that parody and détourne cinema to radical new ends. We also celebrate the collage and found footage movies that capture and reframe the bizarre and ephemeral.

Alongside several features tracing the recent history of the collage and found footage film, we present a shorts programme looking at the grand tradition of repurposing Hollywood product and a panel discussion on the practicalities and possibilities of stolen cinema. Finally, an installation in CCA’s general space will celebrate Museum of Home Video‘s ongoing Fasterpiece Theater segment, which makes quick and tasty omelettes from the curate’s eggs of cinema.

Fasterpiece Theater: for when you just don’t have time for a movie! In today’s post-post-modern world, sometimes a feature film doesn’t fit into your schedule (or worldview). And sometimes, you want to share a film with a friend, but you want them to trust you and not leave the room. Museum of Home Video’s method of reducing movies to the nuggets of their essence – leaving only the wildest dialog or visuals, story beats be damned – is a panacea for the easily bored. You’ll still get the film’s full feeling without losing anything important, and learn how to appreciate the finest of jump cuts.
