Screamplay (Rufus Butler Seder, 1984)

Edgar Allen is an aspiring screenwriter whose best attribute is his wild imagination. He imagines scenes so vividly for the murder mystery he is writing that they seem to come to life…and they do! As mysterious murders pile up, and the line between reality and imagination becomes more and more blurred, Edgar, who is convinced that the only way to be a real writer is to suffer, is slowly driven mad.

Made for a miniscule $50,000, this plucky, inventive gem attracted the support of underground film-making legend George Kuchar, who took a leading role. Its original release undermined by an injudicious local critical response, the film found a home as an outlier in the Troma catalogue, whose own notoriety unfortunately eclipsed Screamplay‘s true worth as a DIY masterpiece. We’re thrilled to present the world premiere of our 4K preservation of the film, drawn from the director’s own 16mm print, in honour of its 40th Anniversary.

With pre-recorded introduction from writer-director-star Rufus Butler Seder.
