The Big Blue (Andrew Horn, 1988)

1hr 40m | Digital | Pre-recorded introduction by Steve Macfarlane

Snoop for hire Jack (David Brisbin) takes on the task of investigating an affair, but one mistake leads to a chain reaction that leads him into a fateful trap. His relationship with two couples becomes complicated, and the story finally culminates in a shootout – a typical film noir story.

In The Big Blue, film-maker Andrew Horn (Doomed Love, The Nomi Song) contructs a classic noir set-up to explore the nature of observing and being observed – as Jack says, “Surveillance gets to be a habit – you look at something like it doesn’t include you.” Horn’s The Big Blue is also an “eclipsed film” (in the company of Scott King’s Treasure Island, John Paizs’ Crime Wave and Craig Denney’s The Astrologer) of undeserved obscurity, due to the name and release year it shares with the better-known Luc Besson film. This Big Blue is a smoky and beguiling nesting-doll of a mystery potboiler, chock full of unforgettable images,” according to Brooklyn’s Spectacle Theater, who have long celebrated Horn’s work.
